CranioSacral Therapy Sessions

A typical CranioSacral Therapy session:

When in the comfort of your home, a typical session begins by finding a space in your home where we can sit and introduce ourselves.  This is also the time I will take a brief history of a clients health and inquire about why they have sought out CranioSacral Therapy and what they hope to achieve.  At this time any questions and concerns can be addressed so that the client is comfortable to continue.  If the session is in my home,  we will sit on a couch designated in my home to introduce ourselves, take a brief history and find out the reason you are seeking CranioSacral Therapy. Please wear comfortable clothing as you will remain fully clothed throughout the session.

Finding the right space in your home to set up my therapeutic table is the next order of business in order to create a quiet, private environment.  The space needs to accommodate my table and rolling chair.  I bring my own i-pod to play soothing music to enhance relaxation, therefore I will need access to an outlet.  I will also bring my own linens and blanket.

During the session, I will stand or sit at various locations along the client's body including at the head, torso, legs and feet.  I typically begin at the feet so I can get an overall assessment of the entire body.  I will gently touch the top of your feet using my hands to listen and to assess patterns of energy.  Your body's energy patterns will lead me to where I will start the session.  Remember that it may not be where the area of pain or dysfunction is located but it is where the body has determined to be first on its agenda of restrictions to release. Throughout the session, I will be constantly reassessing these energy patterns and following your body's direction of where to place my hands next. The goal is that the body is assisted through various restrictions so that it can accomplish its number one goal, self-healing.

What to expect during a CranioSacral Therapy session:

When answering the question about what to expect during a typical CranioSacral Therapy session, it is important to say that no two sessions are alike.  How the client's body will relax and release tensions and energy will vary from session to session. A client may feel so deep in relaxation that they do not speak throughout the session and even may fall asleep.  A client may talk a great deal throughout the session asking questions regarding my hand placement, what I may be feeling in their body or what they are experiencing within their own body.  A client may remember and express hidden memories that have surfaced as they have allowed their body to relax.  These memories may be about a physical or emotional trauma they sustained in their life, or memories about a disease process.  A client may not be particularly aware of where I have placed my hands or a client may sense heat, warmth, or gentle pulsing under or near the area where my hands are located or in distant places in their body.

What to expect to feel following a CranioSacral Therapy session:

How a client will feel following a session also varies from session to session.  When a deep state of relaxation is achieved, a client may feel very relaxed and even sleepy following the session.  When memories of past traumas are released, often times emotions associated with the trauma are also released.  The term used for this is somatoemotional release or SER.    If the client has a somatoemotional release, these emotions may linger for a few days as the body sorts out and heals.  A client may feel immediate pain reduction following  a session or improvement in pain may be observed in the days and weeks to follow.  The practitioner assists the clients body to resume it's own natural healing mechanisms.  This is why although there are often immediate affects, some may be observed in the days and weeks that follow.

How a typical CranioSacral Therapy will end:

A session will end with the client getting up from the table and moving to a location that they have designated prior to the start of the session, such as a chair or couch.  The reason for this is so that they can continue to work on relaxing and continue to work on processing all the changes they have made during the session.  It is recommended that the client does not schedule anything to do immediately following a session.  Prior to getting up from the table and usually during the last 5 minutes of the session, I will provide some self-help techniques so that the client can continue facilitating their own healing after I have gone and in the days and weeks to follow.  Once the client goes to the place they have designated at the start of the session,  I will collapse my table, collect my linen, pack my i-pod and say good-bye.  I am always open to answering any additional questions while I clean up or at a later date by telephone or by e-mail.
